There is good news for Money Heist fans. No, the Spanish crime drama is not returning with a new season, its creator Alex Pina is working on a pandemic series for Netflix instead. So we can only look forward to another thrilling show from his stable.
La Casa De Papel, or Money theft in English, had its near-perfect finale with its fifth season in December 2021. Alex Pina’s brain child, which lasted over four years, left fans wanting more.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pina has extended her worldwide exclusive deal with Netflix. This incorporates the showrunner’s latest “high-concept series” inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic.
As reported by THR, the as-yet-untitled series will be set in a luxury underground bunker purpose-built to survive a pandemic. This is where “the 1% of the country retreats to escape disaster on the surface”. Pina’s inspiration for the plot came from a Spanish newspaper article dated October 9, 2021 “about wealthy Spaniards buying bunkers in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic”.
Money Heist had its finale in December 2021.
Alex Pina was quoted as saying: “Some of the new shelters that were being built were luxury houses in the basement… Up to 15 floors below, with exclusive services, such as cinema, swimming pool, spa, gym and common gardens, with water and food to survive for more than five years. An underground community for 75 people. And then we thought about what life would be like there. Social, family and romantic relationships, in an underground shelter to which they had fled hastily and exclusively.
Alex Pina’s production banner, Vancouver Media, also shared a snapshot of an article announcing his new project as “an apocalyptic concept.”
Meanwhile, Vancouver Media is developing a spin-off series around Berlin, one of Money Heist’s most popular characters, originally played by actor Pedro Alonso. The prequel will revolve around his story before the events of the Money Heist’s first robbery at Spain’s Royal Mint. Berlin is set to debut on Netflix in 2023.
Netflix is also working on the korean adaptation from Money Heist with actors like Yoo Ji-tae, Park Hae-soo, Jeon Jong-seo, Lee Won-jong and Park Myung-hoon. The streaming platform released its first teaser in January. The show will premiere later this year.
