Hyderabad businessman files copyright lawsuit against Lock Upp, show likely to be postponed

As promised by the creators, Lock courts controversy. Hyderabad-based businessman, Sanober Baig has addressed the Hyderabad City Civil Court citing that Lock Upp is based on his recorded idea of a show called The Jail. According to Baig, he had shared the concept with Abhishek Rege of Endemol Shine India, who he said “stabbed him in the back and gave up”. The civil court has now barred the creators of Lock Upp from streaming the show on any platform.

During an exclusive chat with us, Baig said, “I registered my idea with the association in 2018. Then I asked a director Shantanu Re to work with me on the same. We had pitched this very idea to Star Plus, but nothing worked out. And then because of the pandemic, things got delayed again. I have been in contact with Abhishek Rege for a long time and had several meetings on the subject in Hyderabad. He promised that once the market improves, we will move on. A week ago I saw my dreams come true for someone else.

According to Sanober Baig, he saw the promos a week ago and decided to go to court immediately. Not just the idea, Baig said, the creators took over even the smallest details of the format — whether it was having a jailer, contestants in costumes, and the set design. The businessman said that if the civil court has granted an interim stay, he is ready to fight and even go to the Supreme Court to get justice.

Baig also refuted claims that his court appearance had anything to do with fame or money. He said, “I have plenty of money as I am a successful builder in Hyderabad. As for fame, I’m not a politician or a public figure and being in the news won’t help me in any way. It’s not just about me or my huge monetary loss, there’s a whole team that worked on the show. They gave of their time and effort, which can never be recovered. I want justice done for all of them.

The businessman also mentioned that this is not a personal fight and he has no bones to choose with Ekta Kapoor, ALTBalaji, Kangana Ranaut or MX Player.

Sources close to the production house said that the legal team is already on its way to Hyderabad, where the petition has been filed.

When asked if he would withdraw the petition if given proper recognition on the show, Sanober Baig replied, “I don’t know. As I told you, it’s not about me but about a whole team. I would only wish them the best. I’m not a show maker and that’s none of my business. All I want is justice for the people who worked on my idea and put so much time into it.

Hosted by Kangana Ranaut, Lock Upp is set to premiere on February 27. As of now, manufacturers have announced Nisha RawalMunawar Faruqui, Poonam Pandey and Babita Phogat as candidates.
